Love and Lance

It's Been long enough she wrote one last letter to him knowing he wont get it but she can still give It to him when he walks past security.  She wrote:
It’s 7 months 30 day 23 hours and 47 seconds, now 53 seconds and so on. The baby keeps kicking me and the mention of your name. The doctor said he's due date is when you come back/ I hope he comes later so you can see him. I bet he will have your eyes I miss your eyes locked on mine when we shared our first kiss under that tree over the bridge the water was flowing so beautifully. I past by it today I smiled in memory of you. Sorry bout the words I know they're smeared I couldn’t hold them in I miss you so much please come home soon and safe. How do you like the name Lance for our baby after your father?
Love
Claire
P.s. I know you come home in less then 24 hours but I can't help it I need you home now I love you.

Claire Wakes up to a beautiful sun rise what a perfect day to pick up her husband. He's been gone for exactly 8 months in 3..2..1. she hops out her bed as much as she could with a 9 pound human in her and gets in her car and drives all the way to the airport.
She waits and waits and she see a man broad shoulders and a few scratches on his chin and she slowly gets up from her bench and gives her husband a squeeze she doesn’t want to let him go.
"how's the baby?"
"Painful." She holds her back as they gently sit down on the bench.
She hands him the note. As he opens the note his eyes go wide
" I love it!"
Her eyes gleam with joy but then searing pain stabs her in the stomach.
"Are you ok dear?"
"we have to go NOW!"

Irony Of It All

Irony hits the best of us. “The Lotteryby Shirley Jackson irony hits Tessie. Now The Lottery in the story “The Lottery” is not like it is now. Usually when you win all this money, prizes, ect. But it is way different the lottery back then you would get stoned and eventually you die.
Tessie showed up late for the lottery and she was so excited for it. But that all turns once it’s her husband turn to pick the ticket. When suddenly they all turn over there paper to find their family has to drawn again. She screams “no this isn’t fair, he didn’t have enough time.” Her family went up and she drew the awful horrible card. So in result she had to die. The irony of it she was ok with stoning someone else but when it came down to her she freaked.
So irony can hit even the most innocent of us. But even sometimes irony can be good not always bad. In one way its good is when someone does something good and then something good happens to them.

D.A.

Author’s Note: I wrote this piece to represent Main Idea/ theme. The whole theme idea of this is Loss of Family.  In the story The Lovely Bones, the Salmon family just lost their daughter Susie. The family is not taking it well at all. At the mention of Susie’s name, the mother chokes up.

Her mother kept calling her through this whole awful event. She kept saying: “We’re having string beans and lamb; your brother has a new finger painting, and I made apple crumb cake.” But Susie couldn’t say a word; she was just stuck under the dead weight of Mr. Harvey.  “He took the hat from my mouth. Tell me you love me he said. Gently I did. The end came anyway.” Susie tells us this right before the 2nd chapter which leads us to when she is in heaven after her brutal murder/rape.

The Salmon family had to stick together a few days after Susie didn’t come home. They found her elbow and only her elbow. The rest of her body was in a cloth bag shoved in a safe at the bottom of a sink hole. This story is really emphasizes the meaning of family before Susie died. Her dad and her use to make ships inside the bottle. She would hold the bottle for him and he would carefully place every little piece just how he wanted. No one else likes to help the Father besides Susie since they thought it was boring but she stated that she liked it, fascinated by it actually.

When Susie was up in heaven, she could look down and see what people were doing. She saw that her Father smashed all the ships; she saw her brother confused as to why she wasn’t home. She knew he didn’t understand the concept of death and the family knew it would kill him if he knew. While watching the dad and the brother, she saw her mom crying when no one was around, her sister taking the blame and going down the wrong path to try to get over the loss.

While she waited and watched her family mourn over her, she watched Mr. Harvey. She prayed for the day he was caught. She questioned why he wasn’t as careful, I mean, a cloth bad for a dripping corpse, overnight wouldn’t it seep through? “He was so calm like he’s done this before” Susie thought to herself. What if he has done this before?

In conclusion to this, I mean, you have to have courage to move on after a loss. You need supportive, caring, and loving people around you. Susie’s sister was sent to talk to the guidance counselor but she refused to talk. She acted like nothing even happened but if you knew what she was thinking; you would know she is dying inside.

The Talk

Author’s note: I’m writing this piece to represent my prediction by creating some new pages in the book The Lovely Bones. The new Pages I’m creating is about after Susie’s dad comes to talk to Ray and Ray is in his room thinking about everything that just happened.

“Ray I’m sorry” my Father says blank hearted, no tenderness, no sincerity.
He just gets up and walks away like its just some boy. He is not “some boy” he was my first love, I loved him! And he loved me back I know he did he even wrote me a love letter and everything! But no he acts like it doesn’t even matter!
“Thank you Mr. Salmon, I.. I just miss her so much, you know?” Ray said in his cute little accent that made me melt whenever he said the simplest words to me.
“I know how you feel” my dad said as he stands up to leave.
“Have a good night Mr. Salmon”
“You to” Dad yells as the door creaks closed with a big loud BANG as it hitches back into place.
“I’m going up too my room, mum” Ray says with tears coming through to the surface of his eyes.
“Oh, Ok dinner will be ready in 10 minutes. Are you ok?” His mom questioned trying to hold back the urge to hold her son close and let him cry all the tears in his beautiful eyes.
“Yeah I’ll be fine just… just need some time to think that’s all”. He lies on his bed tears streaming down his face He keeps repeating “why her, why her” I tend to ask that same question myself why me why me? Why did Mr. Harvey choose me? Did he always feel that way towards me? Was he longing for the day where he can finally get me alone to do all those awful things to? Or was I just a random pick, an easy target? What was it, why me?
“Why her, Why her!” he screams out so loud I swear his voice might shake the heaven and earth. He keeps repeating that over and over every time getting louder and louder until suddenly he just breaks. His voice cracks and in storms his mom like lighting she storms over and holds him close as he bawls and repeating I loved her. I miss her, why her. I wanted to cry forever and ever I wanted to tell him I’m okay; heavens not bad. But I can’t I wish I could, I would give just one day to tell him I love him back.

Science Essay

Have you ever thought how stem cells actual help people? Well not only does it help with cancer and spine problems it also helps with babies born with birth defects. Stems cells are beneficial to so many things but there are a lot of controversies.
Meanwhile everyone might have different opinions on the stem cell, but there is only one way to explain it and that is. The cell is essentially “blank” and it’s capable of changing into any other cell like skin, muscle, or a nerve cell (What is a Stem Cell?). These cells can be used as a repair system inside the body, and as long as the person alive, the cell will help out other cells (NIH Stem Cell Unit ). Scientists are trying to figure out if these cells can cure cancer or at least help out in the cure for it.
Even though they haven’t figured out if it can help cancer, yet, that is ok there is so many other things it can do. Stem cells can help damaged cells. If patents are exposed to a growth condition and develop in desired stem cells such as muscle cells these can be provided by stem cells.(NIH Stem Cell Unit ). The Amniotic Fluid was found to have stem cells that tell after the fluid is attracted from the abdomen and tested for birth defects (What is a Stem Cell?).
Although they have done great thing, there has been a lot of controversy on this research topic about what might all happen in the future or in the present. There is a big disagreement on this research because people think it takes away the right of the embryos as a equal person (Stem Cell Basic ). There might be other reason why, but really that’s the main reason why people don’t like this idea. Plus, the progress on this has been slowed down and it’s because of all the political controversies (Stem Cell Basic ).
Although people stand to agree to disagree the number of disadvantages is less the advantages. So think to yourself, why wouldn’t you want to save lives? What if you or someone in your life were in their position wouldn’t you want the same? So ask yourself why there is so much controversy if stem cells are so beneficial.

Maybe There is a Happy Ending

A/N: This long piece is suppose to represent word choice and context. Although I know that some of the wording is sad but I want you to know this is not true.
The moon creeps up as I walk on the cold ground, the trees peering down at me. The smallest chirp by a bug makes me jump out of my skin. Crack! I scream like a girl in a horror movie. The time flew by like I was having fun but I can tell you I was not.
9 hours earlier….
“Hey Mom,”
“Where were you?” She says, drunk as usual, but who can blame her. She was sixteen when she first had me her so-called-boyfriend left when she told him she was expecting me. She was so happy at first but then he left. He took everything…our house, food, money, everything. When she first saw the door had been closed by bank with the slip that said how long we have to move out that was dancing in the air as the wind spins it around like the horse on the broken merry go round at the abandoned amusement park.
“I was at school.” I say confused “Mom, are you ok?”
“Of course I am, honey.” She says as she stumbles over to give me a hug. I thought I would fall over here; dead body weight was overcoming just like a whale would be. I can’t help but fall which doesn’t help me at all. Actually, she sits there dazed confused on top of me. I see rage in her eyes as I help her stand up.
“Why did you make me fall?”
“I didn’t try to. I’m sorry, Mom!”
Just as she lifts her hand to hit my face, I quiver in fear like a puppy in the snow of a cold winter. I open my mouth but nothing comes out. Last thing I remember was waking to the TV on one of those old time soap opera that Mom likes; the drama filled ones almost like the teenage Barbie dolls life.
I look in the mirror in my bathroom; it looks like someone poured paint on my face. I try to cover it up but the make-up keeps smearing from the silent tear dripping down my face like the drips of water off a melting icicle.
Wham! The bathroom door flings open with my drunken mother and her creepy new boyfriend.
“What are you doing?!” he screams.
“I…I’m…I’m—”
“Stop stuttering, spit it out!”
“I’m nothing, I’m nothing. I’m doing nothing. Leave me alone!”
“That’s no way to talk to Carl.” Mother says slurring her words.
“Sorry Carl.” I give him the most disgusting look I can as I push by them trying to get to the creaky front door. Just as I open the door, Carl yanks on my hair. I feel like a doll in the hands of a four year old. Carl’s holding my hair, throwing me back into the wall; I touch the back of my head the pain quickly lingers down my body.
I rush to escape turning the door. Hands numb, feet numb, body is just unaware of everything going on. That’s how got to this street because I just kept running but I can tell you this story is not over there is more for you to adore. I walk into an old school diner when suddenly I see a very familiar pair of warm inviting eyes. I look away quickly because being seen all alone in soaked clothes, hair a mess, bruises everywhere on me will not help the little image I have at the most pathetic school I know. Jake is the popular guy I know. Letterman jacket, quarterback, blonde perfect hair, he’s every girls’ dream and sadly even mine.
Jake slinks over to my booth and into the seat across to me. I avoid all eye contact just so he can’t see the bruises, as much as I would love to look into those deep blue eyes. They’re so loving, filled with so much hope not evil and disappointment like I usually see.
I mumble to myself, “What do you want?”
But he hears it, anyway.
“I wanted to make sure you were okay.”
“I’m fine!” I snap.
“Okay, geez.”
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to-“
Just I as say the last word he pushes back my wet hair which already made a puddle on the table and he lifts my chin. I just hear the gasp from him. I can’t bear to look him in the eyes. So I do the only thing I really know how to do.
I ran.
I never looked back when. I think I am alone I start to walk but the moon creeps up as I walk on the cold ground, the trees peering down at me. The smallest chirp by a bug makes me jump out of my skin. Crack! I scream like a girl in a horror movie. Suddenly hands over my mouth and I’m getting spun around but as I open my tear filled eyes. I see Jake. I was mortified and happy. He cups my face gently like you would a baby in your arms. He touches my skin. The pain is like needles, I jump back.
“I’m sorry. Don’t run off.” He says to me. I sit there silent not knowing what to say but this day the day that I dreaded the most. You know the day you actually had to talk to the guy you’re madly in love with but he didn’t even know you exist. He doesn’t even know my name, I think.
“Love—”
Gosh, I curse that name. I never understood why my mom didn’t choose one like Hannah, or Abbey, something like that. Wait; did he just say my name? I wanted to die right there and then but I didn’t.
He grabs my hand and smiles but I look away trying to hide my cheeks that are almost as red as my high tops. Just when I thought this night couldn’t get any better, I hear him say the things I never thought he would say to me.
“Love, remember when we were little and I held you upside down in the well. I stole your ribbon from your hair.’’
I laugh and so does he. Just as he reaches into his back pocket and says “I have had this since that day.”
He lifts up a ragged, torn up ribbon a faint green color. He kisses me and whispers in my ear
“I love you.”
“I love you, too.”
The words Iinger in the air like I’m scared but I’m not; not now at least. He pulls me close; I can feel this body heat against my cold as ice body. He truly does love me.

More Then What You Might Think

I feel like the real meaning behind these two poems are very similar they both represent loosing nature in one way or another. I think the author’s purpose for writing “Big Yellow Taxi” is showing that never take anything for granet. Some things are way greater than others but the small things are usually the best things. In the other poem “Field Below” is representing that she misses the nature of her old home or life.
The mood for these poems are both very sad and depressing. The tone for both of these poems are heartbroken. With the music the first one sounded happier then the words did. On the other hand the other song it diffidently sound like the music goes with the music.

A Poem show Love

Poems can show many things love, happiness, sadness and even connections. The connection between mother and son is special between them and no one quite understands what it is. Although in the short poem Mother to Son it shows you a little bit of the special connection.
The tone defiantly comes off as a loving mother is a tough but is soft at the same time. Shes trying to get message threw to her son but she doesn’t want it to come off as a lecture. On the other hand the mood for a reader is sympathetic to this child because I know we have all had that grandparent or even a parent tell you that life is harder now then it was before.

Predicting the Future

A/N: This piece is what I feel is going to happen in my group book deadly.

How do you catch something invisible? Well in the book Deadly the main character Prudence Galewski figures out evidence and everything falls into places as people are falling ill right out of nowhere. But what will happen if they can’t catch it in time?

I predict that the main character is going to fall ill, although that may just drive more her to find a cure. I think this because I know that a lot of people around her I falling ill, some even dying. Plus since she is trying to find a cure then maybe she’ll catch it from someone.

Another thing that I think might happen is that a lot of the characters might die from this sickness before the Prudence can find a cure, if she finds a cure at all, that is. I think this because even though she has the drive to find a cure, maybe the sickness is too powerful.

In conclusion to this I feel like the main character will triumph over little obstacles and hopefully the biggest one of all, the sickness. Hopefully she doesn’t fall ill in the whole chaos. What do you think will happen?

The Supply Closet

Author’s note: This is a skit is to rewrite the scene where Doon finds the mayor sitting past out on the chair with supplies all around him and then the scene he tells Lina about it which is in the book The City Of Ember.

Doon: where’s that door

*Doon walking around trying to find the door. In the mean time you see Lina trying to do her work but is to distracted by the clues on why the power is going out*

Doon: Ow!!!! (With great pain) * As he bumps his head* Stupid pipe oh there’s that door

*walks in with the door loudly squeaking)

Mayor: Who’s there (with great anger) *furiously coming up in his chair*

*Doon freezes and covers his mouth with his hand*

Mayor: DON’T MAKE ME REAPET MYSELF WHO’S THERE!!

*Doon backs away slowly while the mayor goes back to sleep*

*Scene Change*

*black out. When lights back on Lina is walking and doon comes rushing out on and stops right before he runs straight into her*

Doon: LINA LINA LINA !!!!

Lina: WHAT WHAT WHAT!!

*Doon panting trying to catch his breath*

Doon: You won’t believe what I saw!!! (with great worry)

Lina: What what did you see!! (leaning in to her what he has to say)

Doon: THE MAYOR!

*Lina looking disappointed*

Lina: soo we see him everyday……. Unfortunately *with attitude*

Doon: NO!! I MEAN IN THE LOCK DOOR THERE WAS FOOD EVERY WHERE AND OTHER SUPPLIES!

*Lina shocked and runs off Doon follows*

End scene

The City Not To Be Known

Author's note: In the book The City of Ember to explain the differences between these to characters.
It is simply amazing how two people can be so different yet so much alike. The characters in the book The City of Ember, by Jeanne Duprau are wonderful examples of that. Doon and Lina-the main characters in this book- are just that. Though their dreams and adventurous attitudes Doon and Lina are truly one of the same.

Just one of the many examples of Doon and Lina being similar is the ambitious attitudes they both share not only do they fight to save their city they found out the mayor is hiding a deep secret. Fighting against the mayor is tricky in itself but they have to find clues and figure them out all in private they cant tell a single soul.

Another way they are similar is their dying fear. If they got caught they would be in so much trouble because the mayor would figure out that they know his deep secret. They have t overcome going through doors or paths ways that they don’t know what’s in or on them.

Although they are the same in some ways they are different in others. Like Doon is more into the action. Lina on the other hand wants to just fix it and leave it. Doon just wants to see what’s on the other side. Lina is curious but doesn't know what to do.

In conclusion the story The City of Ember shows different but similar ways two completely different people can be so mush alike. Although I only named three there is so many more ways in this book.

Chnage Is Always a Good Thing

Author's note: this 5 paragraph essay is about how the main character in the short story Thank You Ma'am changes throughout the story.

There she was minding her own business walking home on a dark, dark night when all of a sudden—snap—it happened. The strap on her purse brakes off and the boy falls to the ground with a loud thud. In the short story “Thank you, Ma’am” a boy named Roger starts to find out that sometimes the best thing you can do is ask.

In the beginning Rodger was a rough, tough guy that really didn’t have a good family life. I feel like he could have been abused maybe not like hitting or punching but he seemed not well fed or that fact his face was very dirty he probably doesn’t get taken care of that well. His life doesn’t seem all quite perfect back at his household.

As time goes on he still is questioning this lady he tries to rob. As she beat him up, then dragged him off to her house you could just imagine what was going threw his head. The change of him becoming a rough guy to a guy that understands that the best thing you could do is ask really starts to take place toward the middle of this short story.

As this night goes on he realizes that she wasn’t only cleaning him up and taking care of him but she was teaching him a lesson. Although it doesn’t tell you specifically that she taught him a lesson you can still tell it threw the words of this book. So what do you think the lesson was here? I thought it was that he didn’t need to try and steal her purse.

In conclusion he changes for the good instead of bad. Although he never saw this lady again, they parted with goodbyes. She eventually gave him money for the shoes he wanted in the beginning. Just like the main character Rodger you know sometimes the best thing you can do is ask.

A Quote is Never a Quote if it Doesn't Mean a Thing

Author's Note: This piece is about a quote that was in our story "The City Of Ember"

Every time I see the quote “The main thing is, pay attention. Pay close attention to everything, everything you see. Notice what no one else notices, and you’ll know what no one else knows. What you get is what you get. What you do with what you get, that’s more the point.” It really caught my eye when I was reading because it had so much passion in just a few sentences.

One reason I feel like this quote has a very powerful meaning is because if you don’t pay attention you could miss something really big that could help you along the way of your journey of life or anything for that matter.

Second reason is even if you’re not really on a journey or trying to find something it’s still a great quote because it’s true! If you actually listen to a teacher or your parents you’ll figure out that they are really smart and know what they are talking about.

The City Unknown

Author's note: This short speech is about the main conflict in The City Of Ember.

As the government runs The City of Ember they don’t realize bigger things are going on. The main conflict is that the main character Lina
is trying to save this city that no one knows about. It’s losing power so as she tries to fix this the government isn’t forcing her to work as a job messenger she still has to.

One way I feel like this could be resolved is the government pays more attention to the problems around them then controlling the people. Although some times control is good if it’s causing you not to see bigger problems. Then I would think you would want to know if your city is being destroyed.
The second way I feel like this could be resolved is if the main character teams up with the government and convinces them to fix it. Although that might not work she could go against the government and try to fix it herself or maybe a little help from her friends.

This conflict would be person vs. society because the main characters are going against the government to try to save this secret city. Although the government should be fixing it themselves they ate to busy running this city. Even though I feel like this should be resolved by the government It probably wouldn’t be as good as it is now.

Lesson on leavin'

Author’s Note: This poem is about when I went around my future high school as a shadow. At the time I didn’t know that the high school was the high school I was going to but ever since then I now know where I’m going.

As a walk down the halls

I thought I was so small

Next to all these upper class men

The person I shadow says it's ok

And that day

Was the best day

the changed my life

For the good and the bad

I'm hurting my friends

But gaining new ones

I'm sorry for hurting you

I had to choose the best for me

But never forget that I love thee

Holding on to the Past Destroying the Present Changing the Future

Author’s Note: This is a retelling of the story, Dead Men’s Path.

Although many people think that a person can change, sometimes they never really do. In the short story Dead Men’s Path the main character Michael Obi recently got a new job as the headmaster at a very small school. This school is a lot smaller than the average modern-day school now.

Unfortunately, this school had a small path heading to the town’s cemetery. Michael Obi didn’t like the idea of the path there even though it had been there longer than his father had. He still didn’t like the idea of it there. He decided to do something about it, and he would tell anyone who would listen.

The villagers didn’t like that idea of him getting rid of it. Michael put up barbed wire so they couldn’t use it. This fight had gone on long enough. So finally the villagers just cracked. They destroyed the plants around the path and part of the school.
